Kathy's Story
MY name is Kathy Flamand and I have been supported by Alternatives now for over 30 years. I guess you could say I've grown up with the organization. I have seen the agency go through many changes over the years.
When I first came to Alternatives, I was just 17 years old. There was a large sheltered workshop at the Whitin Mill that served over 200 people.
I worked and received a paycheck, but was not very involved in the community. I was very excited when I was told that the sheltered workshop was closing and that there would be a new program space. The renovation would also allow us to host events and invite the local community!
The new program site that I work out of today serves only 20 people. It's a warm and inviting place to start each day. I enjoy seeing my friends and exploring the community. Most of all, I like to work. I have had a lot of jobs over the years, but most recently I have done packaging at Table Talk Pies in Worcester, and labeling at Sundance Publishing in Northborough. I currently volunteer at Northbridge Senior Center, Faith Fellowship Food Pantry in Uxbridge, and Broad Meadow Brook Audobon Sanctuary in Worcester.
Together we have come a long way. I am proud to say that I have my "own" life.
I also really like to participate in, and help with, the events that we have at the Mill. I attend almost everything that we host on the Community Plaza, and this past summer I helped my parents at the Alternatives' Farmers Market, selling their hand-made bowls.
One of my fondest memories was having the honor to give a speech and help cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Whitin Mill. I invite you to learn more about Alternatives and all the great things they do in your local community. Maybe I will see you at an event next year on our community plaza.
Thank you for reading my story.
